How do I know when to clean my MAF, or even if I should with no issues.

It doesn't hurt to clean it once in a while when you take care of other things in the engine bay. I clean my MAF and MAP sensors when I clean my aftermarket intake, especially since my MAP sensors get covered in oil residue from the PCV system.

The last time I cleaned my MAF sensor was when I got an OBDII error code for a MAF sensor malfunction. Otherwise I just leave it be.

Not sure there's any right or wrong on this. I do it when I clean the throttle plate, which I do about every 40 or 50k miles.
