e average map sensor reading

there isn't really an average. It depends on so many things.

atmospheric pressure at the Earth's surface is 14.7psi, so you shouldn't see it go above that unless the engine is super/turbocharged. You should only see this pressure at wide open throttle (WOT) or engine stopped.

The rest of the time you will see a vacuum (less than 14.7 psi) depending on engine load and throttle opening.

The lowest pressure will be coming down a hill with your foot off the accelerator.

Okay I'm sorry I should have been more clear I have a 2.0 l Ford zetec motor and I have been trying to run down a vacuum leak for a week now and I think I may have found one leak but there may be another I was just wondering what the map sensor should read at an  idle it seems to be working because I do get around 14 with the engine shut off and the key on and when I start and run the motor at an idle it says there is about five to 6 PSI this seems like it may be correct but it is hard to know

Multiply the PSI times 2.036 to he the hg reading. In your case 12.21hg, which seems low.  A healthy engine should read 15-20 hg.

there are better ways to find vacuum leaks.

one way is to use a smoke machine like Scotty. (search his youtube)

Another way is to spray something flammable (starting fluid, propane etc.) around the intake, or mist some water.
