Hey Scotty my 2011 Mazda 3 with 175000 kilometres has began to make a grinding type noise once the A/C kicks on and the engine begins to shake but the AC still works and blows cold what could be the issue??

Could be the compressor clutch is worn or out of adjustment and slipping. On some AC clutches the air gap is adjustable with shims.

Ok thanks would that be a cheaper option than changing out the compressor?
It depends on the compressor. In a lot of cases the clutch alone costs as much or more than the complete compressor. Of course you have the additional expense of evacuating and recharging the system when replacing the compressor. Given that the car is 10 years old though, it's not a bad idea to go with a new (not rebuilt) compressor.
