My nephew has a 2019 mx5 and starting at around 50k miles he heard an engine noise and took it to the dealer. They found nothing. Now at 68k the engine is shot with bad bearing and rod knock. Mazda wants him to pay even though he had told them about the noise while still under warranty. Is this typical for the 2 liter Mazda engine? Is it worth fixing? They want 7,000 and may cover 2,000 of that.

It doesn't sound typical. Not really much in the way of mechanical problems reported for that model.

Assuming proper maintenance otherwise, could the engine have been damaged by a poorly-done oil change, such as the engine being accidentally run without oil?
