Hey Scotty do I have to go to the automotive classes in high school to get into a dealership or will the dealership pay for the education

Also what do I need to work at a dealership?

Don't work for the dealership unless you only go there to get experience temporarily. Dealershisp keep cutting wages. Independent mechanic is the way to go

Hi there. I worked for GM for a decade. If you are looking to be a mechanic at a dealership, the best thing you can do is put in an application for the lube rack. They are going to start pretty much everyone off changing oil and rotating tires, so you can count on that being the first step. If you do a good job, you can then start enrolling in the online factory training classes through help from the service manager. Different manufacturers charge different amounts for training, and some will comp a lot of the price if you are already working at a dealership for them.

Give it a shot but make sure you REALLY want to do it. It is not an easy job and a lot of new guys burn out quick. Best of luck to you!
