2012 Ford Escape giving my biceps a good workout

I have a 2012 ford escape xlt, 4cyl, front wheel dr, 134,000 miles. I would like to get to the bottom of what is the issue with the car, the car while driving at any point in the drive will loose its power steering, forcing me to turn with both hands as hard as possible, doesn't matter what speed im going, or for however long i am driving, and its seems to be mostly when its cold out. once i pull the vehicle over and restart the car the problem goes away. This doesn't happen every drive, but about 60% of the time. I looked for a power steering reservoir but i am unable to locate it, so it makes me think its an electroinc power steering motor, but with research, i should have a light on the dashboard pop up, i believe its an "eps" light from what iv'e looked up, but that doesn't seem to happen either. Theres a popping noise coming from the steering wheel on most turns as well, making me think the two are connected. So my initial thought is cv axel, but there is no tranny fluid leak, no grease on my tire and from iniitlal inspection i see nothing wrong with either axel. So im at a loss and would love your insight as to what it could be. You recently did a video on a grand marque that was my brothers, his name was Ben Feely, so im hopng you can read this and get back to me at your earliest oppurtunity, i Live in Dartmouth massachusetts and would love any sorta help with these issues, Thankyou so much for whatever you can do, Denis

Although yours is a 2012 model it's possible the cause is similar to that which prompted this 2008-2011 recall:

You'll probably need a mechanic with a fancy bi-directional scan tool to diagnose the problem.
