I just had new OEM brakes put on the car and for the past day I've been noticing about 5 mpg less while driving, car slows quicker when coasting, there is a burning smell and a my front two tires/rims are hot after driving it. Should I expect this with new brakes for a few days, or is something rubbing and should I go back to the shop?
The burning smell, and possibly a little smoke is fairly normal, but that should go away pretty quick. I know because I noticed that when just getting a caliper repaired, and new pads. Scared me a bit, but my mechanic said it is the new equipment and brake cleaner they used.
However, I can't think of any reason you would be getting worse mileage, and slowing quicker. My first thought is a stuck caliper dragging a pad or something. The above problem I had was a stuck caliper causing one pad to drag a bit, and a few days later I heard the warning squeak from the pad worn down. I suggest getting it checked as soon as you can.
Take it right back to the shop.
Something is sticking, sounds like the shop didn’t compress the calliper pistons, before installing the new pads..
If you don’t feel confident going back to that shop, take it to another reputed shop, have them diagnose & fix the problem, and then send the bill to the previous shop.
Definitely take it back before the pads melt to the rotors. Do not drive drive the car fast too before fixing this issue.
