Hello from Greece!
my girlfriend needs a new car. In her budget there is a 2017 Ford fiesta 1.25lt 82hp standard transmission with 35k miles. There is also a 2015 Hyundai ix20 1.4 90hp standard transmission with 70k miles.
what do you think?
unfortunately similar hondas and toyotas are way more expensive and old models are out because of strict emissions rules and taxes…
thanks a million
Obviously, if you can, go with a Honda or Toyota.
I personally am not too familiar with the Ford Fiesta or engines from the EU. With that said, generally speaking, avoid most EcoBoost engines. While there may be some good ones here and there, EcoBoost doesn’t really have a good reputation. So it is easier to just avoid them, unless you really know what to look for.
If it is naturally aspirated, that is the better choice of Ford engine. Generally speaking. Also, TMK, the Fiesta is built in Germany, so that may be a benefit. You can probably verify the country of origin for your specific car.
I am not too fond of Hyundai in general.
I wish I could be of more help instead of general advice. I’m just not as familiar with those specific two cars.
looking forward to what others have to say.
Between the two, I would probably go Ford Fiesta, but I'm not familiar with vehicles outside of the U.S. PowerShift DCTs transmissions were horrible, but your girlfriend would be driving a manual, so there's no computerization.
EcoBoost engines only have direct injection, so no fuel flows over the intake valves. My wife's Mustang is an EcoBoost as well, and she's driven 102k miles with no issues, but she also drives long distances and there's a good mix of city and highway driving. I would assume it's a different story in Europe.
Don't buy the Hyundai if they experience the same oil burning problems as they do in the States. It's also more worn out, and Hyundai products don't last.
hondas and toyotas are way more expensive
maybe up front, but not long term.
Totally agree. Unfortunately the budget is very limited and similar yaris are about 3k euros more expensive. Hondas are not that popular except Jazz which is even more expensive than Yaris
The Yaris has been the number one selling car in Greece for 7 years in a row. You said due to budget constraints you need to go with the Fiesta or the Hyundai. I'd go with the Fiesta 1.25 and 5-speed. I'd definitely have a mechanic inspect it thoroughly before buying. The Fiesta has several engines/trim lines available, it's a popular car in Europe.
Both cars are coming with 1 year full warranty and full service history. They are from private persons but they are selling them through a “broker” website which is pretty reliable so far according to many people they use it. I guess Ford seems the best option right now
Both engines are in-direct fuel injection, 4cyl, non turbo. The ford has the ze-tec and the Hyundai the Gamma engine
