Hi Scotty. My engine in my 2006 Lexus GS 300 seized up because I drove it on low oil. It only has 143,000 miles & it’s all wheel drive. I really love my car and hate that I made this mistake. Should I try to fix/replace my engine or just buy a new used Lexus? Please help!
If the rest of the car is fine/rust free & the tranny is still in excellent shape, you might consider putting in a used engine imported from Japan.
This is an awful time to be in the market for a used vehicle as the prices are insane.
Find a used engine and swap it.
You can get a used or rebuilt engine from ATK, Jasper, etc. I would get a rebuilt unit with a warranty. It's always cheaper to keep'er!
Not sure ATK and Jasper do Lexus. If they do that would be great. But regardless, replacing the motor will probably be worthwhile in this market
Considering the mileage, unless you have major issues elsewhere with the car, I would engine swap it. I wouldn't try to rebuild what you have. Just see about getting a low miles used engine as others mentioned.
I would put in a used low mileage engine. You say you were low on oil - did you never check your engine oil? This reminds me of almost what my friend went through 9 years ago, he never checked his oil even when the low oil pressure light came on, continued driving until the engine seized (at around 160,000 miles). He got a used JDM engine (their cars are low mileage there, then they get new one, so that’s a plus), and put on 140,000+ miles since on the 2nd engine and learned to check his oil more often :-). Also, it was low on oil because it was burning oil from (most likely) infrequent oil changes. How often are you changing your engine oil? You should be doing it every 5,000 miles.
Price out the job, and then decide for yourself.
