How’s it going everyone, I was thinking on buying a new Tacoma SR5 with the 3.5 2gr-fks engine. But I’ve recently heard that these engines are coming off with a few issues, from low compression from worn guides and burnt valves, oil leaks, and noisy operation. I wonder if this was just some issues from the factory, or these engines are just terrible in general. Should I avoid this engine? Or hopefully trust that they’vd fixed this issue. Thanks
I have a 2017 SR5 V6 RWD Tacoma with 36k miles now, don’t have any issues with it at all. All I’ve done since I bought it was change the oil every 5k miles. Other than that, absolutely love this truck!
A good friend of mine has a 2020 V6 Tacoma and so far at about 10k miles they haven't had any issues.
Haven't seen the issue crop up here on the forums either.
I don’t see any glaring engine issues here either, at least compared to how many were built:

I would also check the Forums, too, but in general it’s not a systematic issue. That engine is used in other RWD applications (Lexus GS350, IS350, RC350) and haven’t read of any issues. There’s always going to be an outlier or two, but statically very small.
I bought the 2016 v6 TRD off road new back in 2016 and put a little over 70,000 miles on it never had any issues at all with engine but thats low mileage relatively so may not be helpful to you. I turned it in end of lease for a 2018 v6 SR5 4wd and it currently has 75,000 miles on it already. Drove both equally in the big cracked and crazy roads of city of Boston as well as lots of highway Still runs like new and no issues yet. Not sure about Vin#s but if you wanted them I can look them up and send if that helps somehow. Hope this helps.
