Whining noise in rear

Hey Scotty, i recently purchased a 2007 rx350 on your high praise and recommendations.  The vehicle looks new on the outside and the motor and tranny shift and run like new... It has 161500 miles on it..  Now i notice that when i drive the vehicle i hear a whining in the back of the vehicle that increases in pitch with speed and not with rpm... so when i watch the tach drop as the tranny shifts the pitch stays the same... Soooo i am thinking the transfer case or rear diff is stuck in low 4 or high 4..  To me thats what it sounds like.. it definitely is not normal.. or maybe it is. please advise.

Didn't that show up during the pre-purchase inspection?

If you were stuck in low 4WD you'd know it, the engine would be screaming high RPM very quickly. Do you have service records? Was the drivetrain ever serviced (fluids changed)?

Probably the easiest thing to check would be the rear wheel bearings.
