Nissan xterra 2008 230,000+ miles - Nissan spews antifreeze out of the over flow. Over heats in seconds. Right before all this we accidentally put to much antifreeze in the overflow and could not siphon it out. Week later is when the car starts acting up. So today we changed the thermostat, it wasnt the problem. Still over heats in minutes. Ques: how can we troubleshoot without wasting money replacing things that don't need it. Really trying not to replace the water pump unless last resort. Thanks for your help guys.

You might want to test for a blown head gasket to rule out or confirm the worst case.
