NYC yearly car inspection

Hi Scotty,

Love your Channel.

I went to the yearly NY State inspection for my 2004 Toyota Highlander V6 with 154k miles in NYC.

Mechanic told me the front tires aren't good anymore and the 2 belts (serpentine belt + alternator belt) need to be replaced. Taking your advice on 4WD cars I told him to change all 4 tires and he offered me US made Hankook tires which I accepted.

Total price 1000$ for:

4 tires (135$ each tire) + alignment +  2 belts.

In line with your expectations or overpriced?

Also can mechanics rip you off by saying "this needs to be replaced otherwise you don't pass safety inspections" or is it illegal and they have to tell the truth about at least the safety inspection part?

Thanks in advance and love from NYC

Stan

The tire price seems fine at about 540. So you were charged 460 for an alignment and 2 belts. Seems high to me but I don't know the norm for your location and things are expensive in NYC. A mechanic is supposed to be honest but it doesn't mean they will.
