Afternoon Scotty from Northern Ontario! I have a 2008 Mazda 3 with 160,818 miles. I am wondering would it be a good idea to switch from conventional oil to synthetic, it gets really cold where I am but I've always put conventional in

Using synthetic oil is pretty much the norm nowadays. Just switch to it.

That's a good idea. Your engine will like it. Synthetic oil works better in the cold.

Just do it! These days, Canadian Tire offered synthetic oils goes on sale weekly. Nine out of ten times you can buy synthetic at near or equal price of a conventional regular price, … but match the grade! If you currently use, … say, a conventional 5W-30, buy a synthetic 5W-30. Mind you, Mobil1 for example, often suggests that their 0W-30 synthetic can be safely used in service where 5W-30 is specified. I would go with Mobil1 suggestion, … cold Northern Ontario ‘n such reasons.

Full synthetic, not synthetic blend, just to be clear.

I have 2007 Mazda 3 with 158k miles. I use full synthetic. It’s worth the few extra bucks each oil change. Once you change to full synthetic, don’t go back to conventional oil

Synthetic oil used to be a really expensive luxury item. Now ALL oil is expensive so you might as well buy it! HAHAHA But seriously, now that it's more popular, the priced of synth has really come down and I think it's much cleaner and better for engines.
