Hello Scotty,
I am planning to do my own oil change on my 2014 Nissan Altima tomorrow. I know that one is apply a bit of oil on top of the oil filter, but I've seen some videos of people adding oil inside the filter, I am a bit conflicted on what to do since I want to do it right and not blow up my engine, I want to learn the right way. Thank you for any advise!

Unless you have a big diesel engine with a 1 qt filter, you don't need to do that.
I promise that your engine will not blow up.

I usually don't pre-fill my filters, I do not think that's a recommended procedure either.
Car owners manuals have a basic maintenance section, Nissan calls it "Maintenance and do-it-yourself" - follow those instructions.
