[Solved] Oil filter and fuel economy

I have a 2010 KIA Ceed 1.4 L 90 HP engine with 5 Speed manual. It has 160 K km. or almost 100 K miles. I recently had the coolant changed for the first time ever and when they did that they told me the oil filter was loose and some oil was on it so they tightened it. I changed the oil myself 9 K km. or 5,600 miles ago. I turned it half a turn after I felt resistance. I never had an oil spot on my driveway but maybe the filter loosened more as I drove. I did not notice increased oil consumption which might have been oil leaking from the filter. 700 km. or 450 miles before the coolant flush I noticed a 11% reduction in fuel economy BUT after the coolant flush and tightening of the oil filter I noticed 30% better fuel economy (20% better than average for the car's lifetime) in fact I never recorded such a good fuel economy. Did the oil filter get loose and tightening it improved fuel economy did changing antifreeze after 15 years and 160K km. or 100K miles help the fuel efficiency? I will turn the oil filter 3/4 to a full turn after contact on my next oil change. Thanks so much for any advice!😀

Well that's fine. If you have enough tightening ability to make it go the whole way around. Which you basically want to do is do it by hand till it's snug and then try just a little bit more

I don't see how. What is your theory as to how those things would affect fuel economy?

Did the oil filter get loose and tightening it improved fuel economy

No, not a chance.

Nope, just a coincidence.

I turned it half a turn .... I will turn the oil filter 3/4 to a full turn after contact on my next oil change.

3/4 turn is usually what they print on the instructions. Make sure the old rubber gasket comes off with it.

Don't overtighten or you'll have a heck of time getting it off. I always just go hand tight and have never had a problem.

I noticed a 11% reduction in fuel economy

some refineries are already switching to summer fuel blend

I think one full turn is good

Too much. Scotty is right.

When I went to have my coolant changed my mechanic told me the oil filter was a little loose and had some oil on it. Fortunately I check my oil level so it was not a big leak. Next time I change the filter I will mark it with a permanent market when it contacts the gasket. Then I will turn it until I see my mark again. I think one full turn is good. Thank you carkiller for answering my questions.
