My daily '04 Tahoe which I been driving for 7 years now (was a first-owner car) threw an oil light today while traveling along the Interstate. My guess was that it was overheating but actually no. I stopped to get some gas about a mile away and popped the hood open. The oil was full. No signs of leaks. The warning light was flashing red but upon cooling the engine down and starting up again, nothing came back on. What is the problem?
It's an eight cylinder, 5.3 liter. Vehicle has 240 000 miles.

The light has nothing to do with oil level. It's meant to illuminate when oil pressure is critically low.
Verify pressure with a mechanical gauge to rule out the sensor.
Otherwise if could be a problem with the oil pump, the oil pickup in the pan, or just a plain ole wore out engine.
Oil pressure sending unit.
