I am considering switching from 10 30 oil to 10 40 on my 2001 Chevy Impala 3.8L with 224k miles
on it. It burns some oil ( 1qt in 1K miles) and has been causing Cat converters to fail the last few years.
I would like to know if this change is advisable ..

Use only the grade and weight oil specified in your owners manual maintenance section. Get a compression test to see if your rings are worn out, which is a good possibility with that mileage. If that's the case, changing the weight of the oil won't affect anything.
