Firstly I want to thank for the video of the oil change,  I just can't find how to find my previous question. It is to know which is the best old truck to buy. The f150 vs. the Silverado? In truth, the one that breaks less and lasts longer (we don't have enough for a Toyota). Thank you very much for your help

I would go for the Silverado with the good ‘ole pushrod V8 engine and BEFORE they added cylinder deactivation, so look at Silverados model year 2006 and older.

.

Since we are talking about a 17+ year old truck condition and maintenance/service history will be key.

For what it is worth, the interiors were also nicer than in the Fords of that era.

I suppose it depends how old.  If you are trying to figure reliability, it’s a different equation whether you are talking about a truck 1 year out of warranty vs. 10 years out of warranty.  With every year that goes by, the owner becomes more important than the manufacturer. If a truck is frequently towing heavy loads, the transmission is gonna wear out faster than a truck that lives its life as a grocery getter.  And frequent oil changes can go a long way to maximizing reliability in the out years.

Complexity is also a big factor.  I haven’t owned an F150, but the Ford guys seem to think that when Dearborn went all-in on Ecoboost, their reliability took a big hit and they are still trying to catch up.  Same for GM and cylinder deactivation.

PS: for the Silverado, it really depends on the year.  The ones from pre-2000 were very solid (though they are old now so obviously you have to be selective)

Look for an older tundra or even t-100. Those years were not nearly as popular because they were not really a full size truck, but were very good trucks.

If you are trying to find an older F-150 or chevy/gmc that us in good shape and reliable, you are going to have to pay a fair price. Might as well keep an eye out for a good toyota while you are at it, you might find an old gem.

I met a guy at napa yesterday that had a super nice looking 2003 tundra. The thing had 220k miles on it, but it had a new frame!

The thing was in great shape, good maintenance records, and he got it for $6500.

I'd go F-150 myself

I personally would go with  F-150

GM quality declined after they started building in Mexico and around the year 2000

First generation Silverado’s were also built at Fort Wayne, Indiana; Flint, Michigan, USA; and Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
