I bought a used 2002 rav4 in 2012 147,000 miles. It now has 164,000 miles and runs great. I never checked the transmission fluid until now and found it to be grossly over filled, well above the hot fluid mark when cold. The fluid stinks and is dark in color. Should I drain and replace the fluid to correct level or drain to correct level and leave the fluid as is?

Did you check the fluid while running on a flat surface? I would recommend changing if there is an obvious burnt smell.
