My mechanic recently tried to convince me that it is very important for radial tires to always rotate in the same direction.
He claims that it is dangerous to change the direction of rotation in radial tires (not directional tread tires ) because once a tire has been driven in one direction it can fall apart or track weird if the direction is flipped.
Is there any truth to this or is he trying to sell me new tires?
Only directional marked tires should not be switched from side to side. Otherwise, keep switching, … in fact, directional marked tires are mark directionally simply because how effectively they evacuate water, mud and slush while you driving. It’s a function of thread pattern design. On dry pavement only, mount them anyway you like, … just not if you intend to drive in the rain, mud or snow, …
… just sayin’.

That doesn't make any sense. "Radial" means the weave goes across the tire. That means it hits the road at the same angle going forward or backwards.
Now if we were talking about bias ply tires, then you might have an argument.
Now there are some tires which are directional, but it has nothing to do with radial construction. Some tread patterns are designed to work in one direction for things like grip and evacuating water. These tires will have a big arrow stamped into them indicating direction of roll.
