Rotate tires

Hi Scotti

What's your opinion on these free tire rotations dealers offer as a bonus if you bring in your car for service? Every time I let them do this my car's handling changed and usually not for the better.

In the old days I remember our local gas station recommending turning the front tires inside out to even out wear. Does that make any sense these days?

Any problem going to a synthetic oil in an older engine that does not burn oil?

Yes. As far as I know, tires still wear unevenly these days.

But it's an easy job. Certainly not a good reason to take a car to the dealership.

It is another way to get you in and charge you for things you either do not need or you can get them done in a much cheaper price in an independent shop.

What type of car you have and how many miles on that car? Generally, if it is an old engine, you better off with conventional oil or synthetic blend.

It's a 2001 Mercury Villager with a V6. I got it used for free so I don't know whats in the crankcase now.

Just another way to separate you from your money.  How do you turn a tire "inside out?"  If you are going to change the oil, use a synthetic blend instead of full synthetic and see how it works out.  The switch from conventional to full synthetic in older engines can sometimes cause leakage problems.

The side that faced in toward the car now faces out.
