Hi: I have a 95 Toyota Tercel for 26 years now and engine was replaced 50,000 miles ago, radiator due to leak, but not overheat 3 years ago. I got service done, new plugs, oil change, etc. as usual. 3 weeks after driving, it overheated. It was then discovered the oil was overfilled by almost 1 liter. The timing parts and belts needed replacing because they were covered in oil along with radiator because it blew small leaks. Drive fine for 3 weeks, then motor made all kinds of rattle noise and I smelled antifreeze. Now they say I need a head job. Can oil overfill cause overheating issue? Thanks {black}:scared:
Not really
No, adding too much oil can blow seals (as you experienced) but it has nothing to do with the head gasket or cylinder head. You didn't say whether the replacement engine was used or rebuilt but clearly it was not in the greatest shape to fail after 50K miles.
Hi: It was rebuilt and I had no issues with it until after I had maintenance done to it and noticed the overfilled oil. I read it can cause overheating so I wanted opinions on here.
If the engine overheated that could certainly blow the head gasket, or warp or crack the cylinder head.
Yes, but I really wonder if it was due to the overfill because I replaced the engine like 10 years ago and never had an overheating issue before.
A lot can happen in 10 years.
I read it can cause overheating
where?
When I Google "does overfilling your car cause overheating" and I get this and other sites they say yes because of the crankshaft, etc. https://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/overfilled-engine-oil-symptoms-and-fixes/
Don't believe everything you see on the internet.
Obviously it's not good to overfill the engine. Yes it's true that it can cause oil starvation. And sure, some parts might get pretty hot. But as long as your cooling system is working , the engine will not overheat (ie. boil over, blow a head gasket, etc. like yours did)
