Owning a right-hand wheel Toyota in North America

Hello Scotty, I hope that all is well !

I appreciate your honesty in your content.

I would like to hear your thoughts on buying cars (as a main vehicle and daily commute) from right-hand wheel car importers (of course, after I get the car independently inspected from a unrelated mechanic).

The car models that I would consider would be:

- Toyota Hilux (Japanese counterpart of the Tacoma)

or

- Toyota Hilux Surf (Japanese counterpart of the 4Runner)

or

- Toyota Land Cruiser

- and perhaps (if one day I eventually have the use and the money for a second car) a Toyota Celsior (Japanese counterpart of the Lexus LS400)

- and perhaps (if one day I eventually have the use and the money for a two-seater car) a Toyota MR-S (Japanese counterpart of the MR-2).

In terms of mileage: these cars are usually around 60 to 90 thousand miles.

In terms of age: these cars are usually 15 to 20 years old (my local street-legal right-hand wheel car law is that the vehicle must be at least 15 years old).

Thank you very much !

With my gratitude.

don't do it. Everyone I know who got one regretted it. They got rid of them and lost a lot of money. You have to make them inspection worthy. Diagnosing them is a nightmare. Finding parts and information is a nightmare. All the information on the web is in Japanese. And from personal experience, driving them is a nightmare. Making right hand turns becomes a dangerous crap shoot.

Finding parts can be a real PITA. Even though it's a Toyota, many of the parts aren't the same. It's fun for a while but like ^ said, everyone regrets it eventually. It's not worth the headache.
