P0012

Have a ‘06 Prius. Has code P0012 which says a camshaft position timing over -retarded bank 1.
Assuming that means a camshaft position sensor. Checked U Tube for this and the closest I found was a 2011 Prius. Wondering if mine will be the same.

Thanks

I wouldn't assume the problem is the camshaft position sensor.

VVT system description:

The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the ECM, the Oil Control Valve (OCV) and the VVT controller. The ECM sends a target "duty-cycle" control signal to the OCV. This control signal, applied to the OCV, regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. Camshaft timing control is performed based on engine operation condition such as intake air volume, throttle position and engine coolant temperature.

The ECM controls the OCV based on the signals from several sensors. The VVT controller regulates the intake camshaft angle using oil pressure through the OCV. As result, the relative position between the camshaft and the crankshaft is optimized, the engine torque and fuel economy improve, and exhaust emissions decrease.

The ECM detects the actual valve timing using signals from the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. The ECM performs feedback control and verifies target valve timing.

So if this isn't a mechanical issue with the timing gear assembly or a problem with the valve timing, that leaves the OCV (Oil Control Valve) and/or a clogged OCV Filter. Both are easy to inspect and replace if necessary.

You may want to remove and clean, or just replace the OCV filter (it's cheap) also clean and test the OCV. Just remove it and put battery voltage and ground to its 2 terminals to see if it moves.

Of course do an oil and oil filter change when you do this because dirty oil will clog up this stuff.

You access the OCV Filter using an 8mm Hex Socket and then using a pick tool to remove the filter.

What is your question? I don't understand it. {black}:idontknow:
