2018 Ford Focus 1.0 Liter, 3 Cylinder with approximately 49,000 miles on it. Recently, while driving on the highway, I encountered an issue where my car struggled to go past 60 MPH and my oil light and engine light came on. After turning the car off and then back on, the same issue persisted. Soon after, my engine light started flashing, and I had to pull over to the side of the road. I later scanned the car and got the following codes:
P0012: A Camshaft Position Timing Over - Retarded Bank 1
P0014: B Camshaft Position Timing Over - Advanced or System Performance Bank 1
P0012: A Camshaft Position Timing Over - Retarded Bank 1
P0014: B Camshaft Position Timing Over - Advanced or System Performance Bank 1
P0299: Turbocharger / Supercharger Underboost
P0303: Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
I have done some research, and it seems that the issue could range from a simple oil change to problems with the camshaft phaser or timing system. I plan to change the oil myself according to the owner's manual and do a flush. Additionally, bought spark plugs to replace.
I can turn on my car and it will rough idle, but is not able to move. I had car towed the moment engine light flashed. Drove it very easy and heard no pops when issue occurred. Car drove like new prior. I'm very perplexed and mechanics I am contacting are not responding to me. Please help.
Wild that it just... died.
It's not unusual at all for those poorly-engineered little 3-cylinder engines to fail suddenly and catastrophically. You're very fortunate to have it covered by warranty. Once the work is done I'd get rid of that stupid thing before the replacement engine blows up.
when was the vehicle purchased?
2021
The original date of purchase.
In January 18th 2021. Bought at 7900 miles.
no no no .... take your VIN, plug it into a VIN report search, and find out when the very 1st buyer took ownership of the new vehicle.
But it is interesting that it only had 8k after 3 years.
I SEE. Lol sorry. Shows how green I am to all of this. Yeah I believe only one prior owner. Only showing sales records at dealers.

I still don't see the original sale, but it looks like it might have been in Fall 2018. The vehicle has a 5 years powertrain warranty, so it's probably still covered, which means the dealer will probably have to fix it at no charge. So I would look into that.
Do recalls expire? I looked into this, one ford dealer said I was not under the recall, another said I had it until the 12th of this month.
One VIN check I saw somewhat implies that it was already serviced in 2018 for both recalls.
VIN on https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls says 0 Unrepaired Recalls
associated with this VIN
This is my VIN number: 1FADP3FE8JL309688
Sounds like the recalls have been addressed.
.
Now get your engine problem fixed by the dealer, per the powertrain guarantee

So below 60000 miles I am completely covered per guarantee provided above? Even though it has been 5 years?

5 years or 60k, whichever comes first. That's why I linked the warranty guide for you. It's all spelled out for you in there.
Read the fine print .... 5 years from the date the original buyer took ownership of the vehicle. If he bought the car in Sept 2018, then your powertrain warranty is valid until Sept this year so don't dawdle. Ford has the records of all of that.
In fact, if you sign up for a Ford account on their website, and register your VIN, I bet it will tell you everything you need to know.
thank you for everything!
good luck
Thanks! Called 2 dealers that couldn't tell me anything about my coverage. Called a good auto shop near me and the dude talked to me like a human and was great recommended to confirm warranty and go to ford. With your help, I called the national line and I'm confirmed under warranty. She said as soon as I drop it at a ford auto care, give them the case number. She also told me to call her to assist in the process if the issue is indeed power train related. Really sweet. So I'll essentially have to pay for a tow and diagnostics. Potentially get a refund for those tows if it is indeed powertrain. Thank you so much you really helped me out.
great news. Glad it worked out.
Hey I figured I'd give you an update and another thank you for all of your help. Recently got the car in. Extra confirmed via website and call that I have my powertrain warranty until September. Dropped it at a dealer. They called me later that day and told me I needed a new engine. And quickly after said "but its covered by the powertrain so we got that ordered and expect it within 1-3 days". So nonchalant lol.
The most insane thing is that the car had only 44.8k miles on it. No neglect to the car either. Wild that it just... died. Drove like new with no warning signs before this? So one unlucky instance is essentially renewing my car via new engine. Over the moon. Also getting reimbursement for my tows. Really solid experience that could have been awful. Won the lottery over here. You very much helped push the ball down the court so I thank you once more!
You dodged a bullet {pear}:exhausted:
BIG time
