P0204 Code and fix

Hey Scotty! Long time fan. I have a 2014 Ford Mustang 3.7 liter with 184,000 miles on it. I’ve recently started experiencing engine sputters and low acceleration. The car rumbles almost like it’s a boxer engine now. I bought a diagnostic tool to read the check engine warning and it gave me code P0204: Injector circuit open cylinder 4. I looked that up and it could be that the injector is clogged, the cable is bad, the cable is loose, or the injector needs to be replaced. In your professional opinion what’s the best course of action to go to get this fixed?

Thanks man!

Swap the injector on cyliner 4 with another cylinder, if the code followed, then you know the injector is faulty.

I can try that, but is it possible that fuel injector cleaner could clean that out before having to move the injectors? Full transparency I don’t have access to the proper tools to do this and I’d have to take it to a mechanic instead which will be pricey.

It's either a wiring/connector issue or a problem with the injector.

It really doesn't matter what the problem with the injector is, (internal short or open), if it's faulty it needs to be replaced.

So you want to rule out a problem with the wiring going to that #4 injector and its connector.

The easiest way to do that is with a noid light.

So the way you'd go about this is to call the auto parts store and tell them you have a 2014 Mustang and you need a noid light to test your fuel injector wiring connector.

They'll look to see which fuel injectors you have and match up the right noid light.

Now the auto parts store is probably the most expensive place to buy a noid light.

But if time is an issue and you have to get your car back on the road ASAP, then they have you just where they want you.

If you have a little time to work with, and once they tell you which noid light you need, you can look online (Amazon/eBay, etc) and probably get their $35 noid light for around $10.

So like the diagram says, if the noid light flashes steadily, you know the problem isn't in the wiring or the connector. It's a pretty safe bet the problem is the actual #4 fuel injector.

Likewise swapping the injector would tell you whether the injectors bad (problem jumps to diff cylinder) or wiring (problem remains on same cylinder)
In my experience its usually an injector issue
