I have a 2016 Jeep Partiot with 2.4L engine and a regular automatic 6-speed transmission. The computer is giving me a P0420 Code: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). A Jeep dealer checked it out and told me a need a new catalytic converter. They said it will cost $1,000. I don't want to spend that kind of money. Are there things i can double check first? Or maybe take it to a local muffler shop for a cheaper cost? Thank you.
Clarification: what is the mileage?
Oh I forgot to mention that...it has 130,031 miles.
P0420 does not always mean the catalytic converter is the root cause. You have to do the proper diagnostics and confirm (or rule out) that it is the catalytic converter. For that start here:

Like @Daywalker said. It might be something else besides the cat, so it could be something upstream from the cat.
With that said, the two times I got P0420, in two different cars, it was indeed diagnosed to be the cat.
If it is truly the cat. Depending on your state, you can go to a third party mechanic or muffler shop, to get it fixed for a fraction of the price.
If it is California, New York, and several other heavily regulated states, the dealer may be the only option.
