On some old American luxury cars (Cadillac, Chrysler), they had those pillow top seats like a sofa. Have you ever sat in it? How comfortable is it? Today, those pillow seats are obsolete.
Most American sedans used to be comfortable. Then Motor Trend and Car and Driver came, and all the sudden everything needs the fuel economy of a prius, suspension of a mclaren, seats of an early 2010's Acura, twin turbos, price of a mirage, ride quality of a grand marquis, styling of a 67 corvette, driving of a mercilago and paddle shifters on the base model to even compete in the modern market.
A friend has an 87 Town Car with seats like you are describing, and even though it doesn't have all the modern crap it's very comfortable.
Luxury used to mean comfort, now it means electronics and power.
