If a wheel has a 5×4.5 bolt pattern, what do the 5 and 4.5 represent?

5 studs in a 4.5 inch bolts circle.

Good definition listed already, but you'll also find/encounter them listed in metric measurements as well...like 4 x 110 mm or 5 x 120.7 mm
