[Solved] Pinging GMC

Topic starter

I have a 1998 GMC Sonoma with the 4.3 V6 170,000 miles. Once operating temps are reached it pings like crazy. This started about a month ago. No check engine light on. Idles rough and has lack of power. Had a full tune up 7 months ago and replaced fuel filter as well. Tried running higher grade gas and ran some cleaner in two tanks. No difference at all. Does not leak oil or gas and has no smoke of any color coming out of the tail pipe. I'm at my wits end. Please help.

Pinging is not good and means the engine is likely hurt. Take it to someone with a high level scan tool and see what can be done if anything. GL

Update. Had it professionally scanned. All the parameters are within specifications. Since running supreme (very expensive), it still does it. The rough running has disappeared. Ran another bottle of cleaner through it. Could it be the gas itself at the station? I've ran the gas from that station for the last 12 years with no issues and so that is the only other thing I can think of. All spark plugs were checked and look good.

Absolutely could be a bad batch of gas Scotty's seen that before. Keep and eye on it and run through your basic checks if it pops back up again.
