1992 Toyota Previa

204k miles, RWD, Automatic

So I recently bought it. And a mechanic looked at it and said the rear wheel bearings are bolted on in a way where even if it goes bad it’s never going to like fly off the car.

Wondering if anyone know this for certain to be true

My rear wheel bearings, with drums. Have been making a noise when driving. But doesn’t seem to affect how it drives.

Im going to replace them, within few days when parts come in. But wanted to make sure my tire isn’t going to fly off and kill someone.

This mechanic said it could prob go another 30k miles without an issue and ofc I’m not waiting that long

I appreciate y’all

If wheel bearings seize up they can do all kinds of destruction to surrounding parts and in the worst case your wheel certainly can come off. Given that you're dealing with a vehicle that is over 30 years old and may still have original bearings that could be in very rough shape I would not take the chance of driving it around until they're replaced.

If it's wobbling around, and you push it far enough, then yes the wheel will eventually fly off.
