List of major/common issues with Toyota and Honda vehicles (in progress)

If you have any comments about any information on this page, please put it here in the comment section of this original post, rather than the comments of the vehicles below. Thanks!

Also, I will up vote and down vote the 'answer' posts below to order them by make. I will have Toyota vehicles have a vote of 1 and Honda vehicles have a vote of 0. If I decide to include other makes like the Lexus division I might make that a vote of -1. I do this for organization as the 'answers' are organized through "Most Voted" as standard, not that I hate Lexus or anything like that. I would appreciate if any comments/votes are done on this original post rather than any below. Thank You!
Note: This is a flexible and progressive page.

Good job you are doing there. I respect your efforts to help others👍

Nice work. Are you going to provide links for each problem, so that owners of those vehicles can find more information, such as solutions, or manufacturer repair programs?

[Update] To view information about sources and more on buying a used vehicle, scroll down to the Owner Reports page.

If you have inquiries about a certain Toyota/Honda/Lexus/Acura model please just put it here and I could do that model year (range) next

@Kerem as of 2/7/21 are the vehicles below all up to date on the issues?

@daywalker
I am still working on it, there are more issues than you can think of.
Again, if anyone is wondering about a certain vehicle, I could do that one next.

@Kerem what about Toyota Highlander, Toyota Sequoia, Lexus RX, Lexus ES, and Lexus GX next?

@daywalker
Sure, I'll add those.

@Kerem let’s add Toyota Sienna.

@Kerem Toyota Tacoma and Tundra next?

Feel free to add common problems to a vehicle below as long as it follows the general format.

@Kerem let’s add Honda Odyssey

Hi Kerem,
Do you have info about the Toyota Rav4 (2013-2016) model? Thank you so much for your insight 😊

@lexusluv They seem to be relatively trouble free, but the later in the generation the more the kinks will be worked out (2016-2018 seems to be the best).
It seems the earlier years had some EVAP system problems and other kinks like ABS problems and a hard to see infotainment.
https://repairpal.com/2013-toyota-rav4/problems
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2013/
Also, if you don't need AWD stick to the FWD as AWD vehicles tend to have more expensive repairs and more expensive ones as well.
https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/RAV4/2016/
Toyota seems to improve the RAV4 as the model years progress, the later the better.
This can also be seen in their crash test ratings:
https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/rav4-4-door-suv/2013
https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/rav4-4-door-suv/2015
https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/rav4-4-door-suv/2018

I didn't include those model years as there wasn't anything really major about them, but rather a lot of small annoyances with the earlier 2013-2015 years. You really can't go wrong but its a situation of 2018>2017>2016>2015>2014>2013
Good luck car buying!

@lexuslux
Lots of Toyotas had transmission problems around 100k miles because people didn't change their ATF.

@Kerem Hi i'm new here and i really appreciate all of the work you put into this. I've been hoping to get in touch with Scotty and ask him if he would do a toyota model/production year review series that details what issues plagued what cars. However, it seems you are doing just that here! I'm currently trying to buy a cheap toyota suv that will last and last and last with little to no issues. I don't need it to be new, 4wd or a large engine. My budget is between 5k to 9k. Do you have any recommendations? I don't mind high mileage as long as it's expected to last a long time. I know what i'm asking for is a lot, but if you could just recommend a model or two with production years that are affordable and known to last i would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time!

@bleysinhazen can you create a new thread asking that question? We are trying to keep the threads organized. Also, you may get more answers and insight that way. Thank you much.

@DayWalker I'll do that, thank you.
