2012 Toyota RAV 4 / 4CLY 2.5L 2AR-FE, about 87,000 miles - This car has had for as long as I remember a "clatter" sound that you hear for a split second upon cold starts. I kind of accepted the noise as normal, until I recently stumbled upon a TSB (T-SB-0041-13) that sounds exactly like my issue. The TSB pointes to a defect in the camshaft gear. It seems like there is a wide range of opinions on this issue. This car has always recieved oil changes every 5K with 0W20, and other than the noisy cold start, runs great. Anyone else have experience with the Toyota startup noise?
Yeah and it often is in the camshaft gear there. The variable valve timing can be noisy, but I mean if it only does it for a second and then stops. I've seen people drive them years that way
