i have a 2003 corolla with drum brakes.  is it worth changing them to disk brakes?

Probably not. That's not a high-performance vehicle and the rear drums should be perfectly adequate for it.

Personally, I would say no. Your Corolla is a light car. Remember that your front brakes do 70% of the braking. Also, if the rear brakes get too aggressive the rear of the vehicle will try to out run the front of the vehicle on a hard stop. That's why they put proportioning valves in disc / drum systems.
