- Hello, 2000 year Renault Megane manual gearbox 1.9 diesel 370k km mileage, while driving if I shift into neutral gear ratling sound comes for half a second some times. If slowly reducing rpms then no sound. Can it be flywheel? As I heard it might has a complex flywheel. Also once in highway while going 130km/h I pushed full throttle till 150km/h, smell of clutch came, but usualy it doesnt come after driving fast.

i am not an expert but what you describe is common on diesel engines with manual transmission. Had sth similar on my bmw 320 diesel 258k kms. It was rattling when starting. I went to the mechanic, he said there is some play in the flywheel but not too dramatic. Since i didnt want to pay the 400 euro for a new flywheel i only changed the clutch for 90 euros (old one was completely gone) and now the rattling is almost gone. It is only there if I do like agressive almost drag-racing starts. Have done 25t kms since.
