Hi. In February, the engine seized in our 2006 Honda Pilot V6 4WD. We are the original owners and it had 233k miles on it. We got a quote for a used engine with 93k miles for $5800 installed but I thought in April that wasn’t worth the cost. After a few months of frustratingly looking at buying a new car, markups, and lack of inventory I’m reconsidering putting a used engine in the old Pilot again. Do you think new cars coming down anytime soon or should I just go ahead with a used engine around $5500, less than 125k miles and 12 month warranty? Will mainly be a high school teenagers transportation. Thanks
Why pay $5800 for a used engine when you can get a reman engine with a warranty for nearly the same price? Powertrain Products, ATK, Jasper, etc.
$5800!was the installed price. Jasper engines were going to be $7k-$8k installed.

If you take this route, can you then sell it at market value and buy something else with the proceeds from the sale?
I don’t think I would make my money back unless I was lucky to sale it at the high end of value. I had alway put $1k into it a couple months before it seized. With markups still being around $5k over msrp I’m thinking it’s better to put that in an engine than an arbitrary markup.
Trouble is you don’t know what’s the ‘real condition’ of that used engine. And what about the transmission? That’s the next big ticket item. Do you research well, before making a decision.
Agreed. The car ran great for the prior to this issue. It sat for a long period (1.5 years) due to a simple yet difficult to find electrical issue which maybe contributed to the engine failing.
If I put $5k in and at least get a year out of it, maybe that’s better than putting $5k into a new car markup which would also evaporate if prices come back to normal.
