Hello,
I drive a front wheel drive SUV and one of my rear tires is needing a replacement due to a puncture.
All of my tires are ~20k miles old (also ~2 years old). Would it be ok/safe to replace one tire only instead of in pair?
It's safe in terms of not damaging the drivetrain if you replace 1 tire on a non-drive wheel. It may have negative effects on vehicle handling, however, especially if it is a different make and model of tire.
have you checked the owner's manual?
I buy my tires from Costco and I got a nail in one tire and they just replaced it with a new tire at no charge instead of fixing it (exact same one as on the car so it matches the 3 other ones) and I've never had any issues, so from personal experience it's fine changing just one tire. And I'm assuming they wouldn't do it if it was not safe to do so.
Thanks for the reply. How old were your three other tires when they replaced that one?
no worries. almost 3 years old.
