I have a 2010 Mercury Mariner with the 2.5 ltr 4 cylinder. It has 158000 miles. For months the engine has growled/roared when first under load, such as backing out of my driveway or when first put in drive. It is worse in hot weather. A mechanic said the motor mounts were fine. Power output is fine otherwise. Everything is original except the brakes and tires. It does not burn oil and I have been very careful to do all scheduled maintenance.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

is it an automatic? How's the fluid?

Check the color of transmission fluid.
