Is the 2006 Jeep Liberty 2.8L diesel engine any good?

No. Keep in mind the rest of the vehicle does not hold up long term. You always have to look at the complete package, not just the engine.

The Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CRV will be less maintenance in the long run
