I have a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport with 48000 miles. The CVT transmission has been performing well. However, in the last 6 months the transmission, when slowing when approaching a stop sign or red light, the transmission will jerk, shudder, clunk and rattle as I stop. This happens intermittently. I had the transmission diagnosed at a Nissan dealer recently. They claim no codes came up. The Senior Transmission Tech test drove the car with me. He was able to duplicate this issue. The tech said that this was normal for these transmissions and does not see a problem at this time. I own this vehicle.
My 5 YEAR/60000 Mile Nissan drivetrain warranty expires on July 21, 2022. If this transmission fails after the expiration of the warranty, I can expect a replacement transmission to cost about $4500. Is this jerk, shudder, clunk and rattle nothing to worry about, or a warning that this transmission is likely to fail?
It's an indication that the trans is about to fail. Have the dealer fix or replace it now while it's under warranty. Typical that a dealer would tell you this is "normal." It is NOT. They are lying.
Yep I agree.
dealers love to say “it stores no codes so it’s fine” when in reality that means absolutely nothing. Codes are to help diagnose an issue - not to indicate if there’s one.
Also “that’s normal” after they replicate an issue, a lot of the times that actually means “I haven’t seen this issue yet, interesting”
Yeah, that’s definitely not normal, and your warranty is a few months from expiring. If I were you, I would look into replacing that vehicle. Those CVTs were the weak link of those Nissans.
If it didnt do it when you first bought it, i'd say its NOT normal, and I bet if you took the car there in 6 months from now they'd just say yeah the trans is going out and try to sell you a new one. Im no expert on these, but it sounds like its having issues. Id take it back soon & say its getting worse/ happening more frequently. Hopefully they dont tell you its needs a software update just trying to delay time, last thing they want to do is warranty work. I think I'd have to demand it gets fixed/replaced under warranty.
This is the normal dealership thing to say "it's normal" when in reality there's something going wrong. And tbh that so-called "senior transmission tech" I don't think understood anything more than those kids that just change oil and rotate tires at dealerships. Take it to your trusted independent mechanic to exactly diagnose the issue and then with that diagnosis take it to the dealership and have them fix it while under warranty. Afterwards since you own the vehicle and based on what this car is worth and if financially feasible for you sell this and get something else; Toyota or Honda.
I would check the transmission and engine mounts and the speed sensors. Did you also check the transmission fluid? If you don't have enough fluid, the transmission won't have enough lubrication to shift properly. Because you have less than 50k, you can change the fluid entirely; but only a drain and refill. If it's an internal problem with the transmission, then you're going to have problems in the long run.
My Altima with the 2.5 and CVT with just under 79k. Mine does not jerk around and is still really smooth. I did a tranny service at 60 something thousand miles after watching Scotty's videos about the Nissan's CVT.
