How can I rustproof the fenders and door panels on a 13 year old vehicle (2010 Town and County)? Before the 'proofinng', how can the existing rust be dealt with?
I've just done this yesterday on my Lexus IS. I bought it 2 years ago and it didn't have a speck of rust on it, then I went through UK salt roads last year and it had surface rust on the suspension parts after 6 months.
I removed the rust with some cheap brass brushes that fit in a battery drill. I reasoned that any chemical powerful enough to remove the rust will effect the rubber.
Then I rubbed it down with turpentine and used Teroson spray. I saw somewhere on a Toyota site that this is what they recommend or use. It dries almost instantly and looks like it only needs 1 coat, but I'll give it 2.
There's some dust as the rust comes off that if you're a bit particular you could make the argument that it's contaminating other parts. But it was a windy day, so I wasn't too bothered.
rubberized undercoating traps dirt an moisture and will make rust worse.
Rust doesn't spread through dust. It's not an infectious disease.
