Hey guys, I have a 1986 Olds Cutlass Supreme that I have been fixing and this winter has me a little worried. When I picked this thing up it had sat for 4 years and it clearly has rust in the system. Nothing too bad that it would overheat the car, but enough that it couldn't flush it out with regular D water and flush products. My coolant is mixed with rust and I'm worried that it will freeze if it gets cold enough. For location wise I live in NC. Should I be worried and pay a mechanic to do a professional flush before it gets too cold or will it be ok for the time being?
A lot of the rust could just actually be trapped in the radiator and taking the rad out and then attempting a flush on the system and flushing the rad seperatly would probably be the most effective. When I picked up my e30 it had lots of rust in the coolant as well and that's what I did. The system flush without rad cleared my system clean. And I ended up replacing the radiator because I full flushed it like 4 times and there was still full of rust. Maybe you will have better luck lol. Or take it to a mechanic to fully assess the damage if you are not up to getting your hands dirty again. Coolant is nasty lol
I would ask a mechanic to flush it completely and change the radiator.
