Hello Scotty,
I hope you finally read a question of mine in any of your videos, big fan! I have a Canadian Toyota Matrix ATM 2004 with 138,209 km(or miles not sure if it's from Canada). Lately, it has become quite loud (inside) than usual. This loud happens only when going in highway speeds, driving slowly purrs like a kitten. I change the oil, oil filter, and air filters regularly. No leaks of any kind, and I just recently changed the four ball bearing on the 4 tires. The tires are relatively new (they have like a year and a half or something), and the motor and transmission mounts are like a year old as well.
My mechanic is telling me that we have to lower the transmission to find out what's going on, I'm not sure about this because the transmission shifts like a dream! But he's telling me that is not the gears per se, but bearings in the transmission...
Please help I don't get ripped off Scotty! Thank you!
It could be the bearings. I would also check and see if your tires need an alignment.
Hmm, not sure about this because the car doesn't shake at all. At highway speeds it should vibrate if it would need one, but no, it's just like a loud humm inside. Thank you for suggestion though! I appreciate it.
Does this car have a lot of rust or something? You said you changed all four wheel bearings, and motor and transmission mounts?
Are you using the same mechanic that had you change all your bearings? What reason was there for changing them?
Nope. No rust. I changed the bearings because my mechanic told me that was the reason the vehicle became so loud. Since it's an old car and I take very good care of it, I changed them without hesitation because, 1) something was not right, and 2) even if that was not it, there's no harm in putting new ones in either way.
@navarryu I would suggest more diagnosing before letting your mechanic start changing more parts. Can you record a sample of the sound and let us hear it? Scotty has some videos on tracking down sounds. Might want to take a look, and maybe you can track it down yourself.
