Question for Scotty,

Here in the UK they are thinking about letting drivers/owners of "self-driving cars" be immune from a wide range of road laws https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/selfdriving-car-law-drivers-b2000898.html

Has the same stupid idea been mentioned in the States and what do you think of our idiotic lawmakers?

I think they brought out all the new laws that are going into effect tomorrow to drive people off the road as well. They know nobody wants electric cars, so they're trying to get us to buy them / the self driving ones.

AFAIK the self driving ones don't work?.

So not my fault officer! The car just ploughed through 12 cyclists down that country lane. Maybe it was working in feet and inches when I said leave 5 feet and it only drove over six and a half of them...

Maybe if Elon Musk had programmed it to run in metric it might have thought it was in France and kept on the right side of the road for longer. {black}:laughingoutloud:

Well I haven't seen anything that crazy in the United States yet. But not much surprises me about England I went there a few years ago and I was amazed at what a mess the country was. The stupid trains smelled like raw sewage and the in quotation mark workers had no interest in fixing it. Half The rail lines have been ripped up because it wasn't profitable to go to smaller places on the trains even though they told everybody to get rid of their cars and ride the trains then they said by diesels cuz they get better gas mileage but now they want to get rid of them too. No wonder George Orwell wrote 1984 he was just off on the date of it.

Yup, got it about spot on. Our country is run by idiots and people are too interested in watching TV to bother questioning things that affect their lives. This is just another example of how stupid my country is.

The USA goverment is on this big "pitch" and support for EV's. Problem is 90% of Americans cant afford them. Until you can buy a reliable used EV for 10K or less they will never become the major new source of transportation. Gas and gas stations and fillup convenience is just way too easy for Americas way of life.......no patience!

Huge price hike in the cost of electricity has just hit the UK. The only good thing we have here is not having Biden as PM 😉

Found this article here: "The changes would build on the reforms introduced by the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018, which ensured that victims who suffer injury or damage from a vehicle that was driving itself will not need to prove that anyone was at fault. Instead, the insurer will compensate the victim directly."

I didn't realise that what they're proposing is that you're immune from road traffic laws when you're in the car. I thought you were immune when it was driving itself. So they've just given carte blanche to people to say "It wasn't me it was the car". All the tech available, and this is what its come to.

If we didn't live in such an agenda driven world I'd say watch the insurance cost on these cars when your millenial neighbour decides to get one. But it's possible the government will just tell companies to share the cost. Like it did in the UK when all the uninsured drivers got on the road.

Believe it or not, I'm paying more for my car insurance 25 years on than I did when I first passed my test. And I've never had a claim, got no points on my licence, and driving a 16 year old car now instead of a work van.

Just saw this today of what some politician wants introducing

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/grant-shapps-northern-ireland-britain-european-union-government-b2005808.html

1. Advanced emergency brakingA radar signal at the front of the vehicle continuously scans the road ahead for a potential collision.

When a risk is detected, a warning signal and alert is generated for the driver. If this is ignored, the system automatically slows the vehicle.

2. Emergency stop signalsHazard lights flash when the driver suddenly brakes.

3. Lane departure warnings and lane keeping assistanceHelps to prevent drivers accidentally leaving their lane.

4. Intelligent speed assistanceUses road sign recognition cameras and GPS to discourage or prevent speeding.

5. Driver drowsiness and attention monitoringMonitors drivers’ level of drowsiness and warns them when they should no longer be at the wheel.

6. Distraction recognition and driver readiness monitoring for automated drivingHelps keep motorists focused during automated driving.

7. Event data recordersRecords data such as speed, braking and engine throttle in the seconds before, during and after a crash.

8. Reversing safetyCameras or detection systems that help with reversing.

9. Direct visionImprove lorry and bus drivers’ vision of vulnerable road users.

10. Pedestrian and cyclist detection and warning systemsSystems on the side of lorries and buses to alert drivers to the presence of vulnerable road users.

11. Alcohol interlock installation facilitationThese systems prevent driving after consuming excess alcohol.

12. Improved car and light van protectionGreater protection for pedestrians and cyclists in the event of a crash.

13. Improved frontal impact occupant protectionProtection that does not disadvantage women and older people travelling in cars and vans.

14. Improved side impact protectionMore protection for cars and vans.

15. Tyre pressure monitoringSensors issue an alert on a vehicle’s dashboard when tyre pressures are low.

It just strikes me as a stitch-up. The government is going to make it so that only the super rich can afford to drive their own cars. Then they have the insurance companies drive up the cost of insurance as driving your own car is going to be considered more dangerous than letting your car drive itself.

I think personally that this is the sort of thing that happens when garbage politicians don't create laws that protect citizens. Then companies can create contracts and services that people have to abide by that sidestep laws and rights.

What I really want to see is a Le Mans race with all the self driving electric cars going for 24 hours without crashing. Maybe put Elon Musk and all the other bigwigs and celebrities in there and see who wins. Now that I would watch.
