I am getting ready to retire. I need a reliable SUV possibly AWD for my (and my wife's) retirement car at my retirement cabin in North Carolina. I have about $13,000 to spend on a vehicle. Please recommend something or several vehicles that I could choose - ones that would last me in my retirement. Plus we need it for long drives to see grandchildren. Should we be concerned about gas only vehicles in the near future?

2012+ Highlander AWD, RAV4, Honda CRV. Before the pandemic you could find them at reasonable prices. In the current used market, finding a decent one for $13k might be difficult to find.

I would offer an older Toyota Rav4 or maybe a Honda CR-V if you can locate one in your price range. That's going to be the challenge. I would also add in the Highlander, but again, price will be tough on any newer ones. They are more difficult to locate, but I would also suggest looking for a lower mileage Honda Element 4WD. I think you'd be really pleased (and frankly surprised) with the versatility those offer.
