Scotty,

My wife and I are expecting our first child and safety is of upmost importance. We have been looking at both the highlander and Volvo XC90 and prefer the safety features of the XC90 also me being 6’7 the Volvo is the most comfortable. What are your thoughts on the new XC90s?

Thanks,

First off its sounds like the Volvo makes you the most confortable in safety and driving position. Yes Toyotas are great on longevity but chances are like most people you are going to want a change with your vehicle after 4 to 5 years. The Toyota will hold its value better. But if you lease, then who cares. What I do find annoying about Toyotas is that at least where I live you will always pay HIGH property taxes on Toyotas and Hondas as they hold there value. I have owned Volvos in the past with a family and did like them. They do need a little more love and care then a toyota BUT ya gotta love what you drive.

The newer Volvos nowadays are nothing like the much older ones (which could last).  They are owned now by Chinese company Geely and are very high tech cars.  As it ages when the powertrain/electronics do have issues in the future it will start to become a money pit outside of warranty.  So my recommendation is if you like, lease it or if you buy it only keep under warranty then get rid of it.  If you are looking to keep for a long time, you are better off looking at a Toyota or a Honda.

Hy!

This generation came out in 2015, so you are buying one of 'guinea pig' years. I'm familiar petrol engines had problems because of bad spark plugs. They also have problems with some of diesel engines. I suggest you look at newer ones.

Good luck!
