I am looking at a 2016 F150 limited. Anyone have any experience with one? It has about 50k on it.
For 2016, I'd go for the V8. The EcoBoost motors have a lot of issues and so do the 18+ V8's, but a 2016 should be ok. Just make sure you have a mechanic check it out and don't overpay for the fancy "Limited" badging.
Go for the V8 - the EcoBoost V6 is not great for a big truck.
To be honest, If it has the V6 it still has a lot of life left in it. Of course, the V8 is a better engine but ford has been making those V6 engines for a while now and has been fixing issues with the engines. The V6 is a good well-built engine, and if it is well taken care of, you could get upwards of 100K miles on it. You can still tow a lot with a V6. Just make sure to change the oil, maybe run some fuel injector cleaner through it, change the coolant, both differential fluids, transfer case fluid, spark plugs, etc. at 100-150K miles if you keep your trucks that long.
Are you talking about the 3.5 L Cyclone V6 engine used in MY 2015-2017 F-150’s? If so, that had the water pump behind the timing chain cover and also driven by a timing chain. Worst case if the pump leaked it could take out the whole engine. And if it didn’t, that’s one expensive job replacing the water pump due to its location. Timing chain driving a water pump is a bad design, unless the water pump was designed to last virtually forever (which it was not here).
Yes, I am. Even though it was a bad design on ford's part, the possibility of the water pump going out on a truck that has 50,000 miles on it is very low, but I am not ruling it out. I owned a 2012 ford f150 with the Cyclone engine, and at the time that I sold it, it had 233,000 miles on the odometer., and the water pump has never been changed.
