It will be somewhere about 21 to 23k residual plus taxes and title with only 1 year left warranty. It has 20k miles and 4 months remaining on lease. I'm thinking if I keep it I'd want a point inspection some touch up to cosmetics and an extended warranty. I'm torn do I just go get a subaru spiff it up and spend 30k there or keep my x2 for obvious reasons. And if I do keep it will the extended warranty cover the repairs of the crossover that would most likely come up? Please help!
Don’t bother buying it out. German cars are only meant to be leased, not purchased; besides if you bought it and extended the warranty, who’s to say they won’t try to weasel their way out of a warranty claim and then you are on the hook to get it fixed on your dime.
The engines BMW used in these is the B48 a small turbocharged gasoline with direct injection. As I see it, it is likely that fixing issues and getting parts for this engine will be difficult - especially considering it's not a cheap engine and a new one is likely to cost about $10k.
Unlike older BMW models, where they used a proper transmission even on their budget oriented models - The X2 uses what you'd find on a small French city car, the "BMW 8-speed StepTronic" is just an cheap old conventional from Aisin.
Although there's nothing bad about the gearbox that they have chosen by it self, when paired with a 230 horsepower engine and given a sporty tune - It just will not last long, as they're already the weak-spot even on cars making 1/2 that power.
I do not think that keeping this ~3 year old X2, is a smart idea because of the rubbish gearbox and of the turbo charged engine - If it would've been one with a naturally aspirated engine and a solid ZF transmission, it might have been a completely different story.
A Subaru might be a better choice, a thing to look out for is their LineTronic CVTs.
They're not the best built transmissions on the market and Subaru doesn't sell some of the parts known for going bad early at all. (What can be a solenoid replacement, ends up being a much more expensive valve body replacement as a single unit.)
Keep your transmission fluid clean and change both it and the filter at least every 40,000 miles and note that the Impreza (and XV) may use a different fluid from the rest of the Subaru line up.
