Should I do a transmission oil change on 1999 Toyota 4Runner?

I recently bought a 99 Toyota 4runner with 106K on the clock from a guy who worked at a Toyota dealer and snagged it from an "old couple" trade in. He then put a slight lift with 17" wheels/tires. (plus a whole lot more but not relevant to my question) It has the 3.4 engine with an automatic tranny with 4 wheel drive.  After the first three thousand miles it doesn't burn any oil which was no surprise, and I would like to know if it would be ok, since it is a Toyota to change the filter and oil in the transmission and transfer case, or just do the drain 2 quarts and add new every now and again.  The frame is still solid and the little truck is in real nice condition.

If you have an automatic trans, you'll be changing the fluid and filter.  If you have a manual trans you'll be changing the oil.  The transfer case generally uses oil.  Consult the maintenance section of your owner's manual for the specified fluids and oil and amounts.  You might as well change the differential oils out as well while you're under there.

Thank you for your response, sir. I guess what I meant was, is it a good idea to open up that transmission after that many miles as I know many automatic transmissions don't take to well to the new oil and can fail soon after. Being a Toyota I do hold it to a higher standard but it is a 23 year old unit.

If it were my Toyota, I would still do the drain and fill (along with filter change).  Just in case, save the old fluid that comes out.
